Mayavi2 in Debian

Thanks to the combined efforts of Ondrej Certik, who made me do the necessary tarballs, and Varun Hiremath, who finalized the packaging efforts, Mayavi2 is now in Debian ( http://packages.debian.org/sid/mayavi2 ). Currently, it is in testing, but it will soon trickle down to unstable. Along with Mayavi2, we have two new Debian packages: Traits, and TraitsUI, two other absolutely great Python packages and, IMHO, fundamental technologies.

This is looking very good for simplifying reuse of these technologies.

    Hello,
    this is good news.

I’d be glad if you could highlight the packaging process a bit.
I intend to package some python modules and programs for Ubuntu but don’t know how.

    Kinf regards,
    Timmie

    Hi Timmie.
Sorry, I can’t help you much here. Basically the way it went was that we did some source tarballs, provided automatic build and install scripts, and adescription of the package. Ondrej help me during this process, and later on Varun finished the work.
If you want to learn packaging, the ubuntu docs are supposed to be very good for that ( http://doc.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/packagingguide/C/ ) and the people on IRC help packaging. But I have never done it myself, sorry.

You switched unstable and testing. The correct sentence should have been

Currently, it is in unstable, but it will soon trickle down to testing.
